Transportation technology is the machinery and equipment utilised to improve the lives of people and to solve problems pertaining to the commuting of people and the movement of goods.
THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN TRANSPORTATION
Organisations can utilise satellite tracking to monitor the location of their vehicles, the speed that their vehicles are travelling and check if the vehicles have committed any traffic violations.
Organisations are also utilising Wi-Fi in their transportation management.
The reason for this internet connectivity, is to serve as a vital link in a supply chain by providing up-to-date information to each participant along the supply chain.
Organisations that make use of the just-in-time (JIT) principle will benefit greatly, as this inter-supply chain connectivity link will allow for better tracking and monitoring.
Technology is rapidly evolving, and if one looks at the cellular phone networks as an example, the infrastructure has evolved from the global system for mobile (GSM) infrastructure to 4G and 5G networks.
Technology in passenger transportation in South Africa already includes onboard Wi-Fi hotspots – both passenger transportation and commercial transportation utilise on-board Wi-Fi.
Commuters can access the internet while they are in transit from Point A to Point B, while organisations can utilise the connection to view status updates on the vehicle’s trips.
