Transportation Planning Flashcards
What is the focus of transportation planning
To facilitate the efficient movement
of people and goods around the world.
True or false:
When a country takes time to develop and invest in transportation systems and infrastructure, the effect is growth and development which leads to a positive outcome for the economy and a direct contribution to the GDP and its rise.
True
The transportation planning process
Stage 1: Transportation survey, data collection and analysis
Stage 2: Transportation model
Stage 3: Future land use and alternative policy strategies
Stage 4: Policy evaluations
Transportation planners
Transportation planners engage in various research-based undertakings to effectively manage the growth of transportation structures and the evaluation of existing policies, among the major modes of transportation in South Africa.
TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IN ORGANISATIONS: Consolidation of deliveries
Consolidation of deliveries can be defined as the deliveries of goods to various destinations within a common radius by a single carrier and in a single vehicle
Method 1: Consolidation through movements
This method is related to a number of goods originating from separate points but having a planned “common” destination or many different destinations (within the same area), where one part of the route remains common to all goods.
Method 2: Traffic pooling and distribution
This helps to reduce the total distance travelled by preventing overlaps from occurring.
Goods can be transported to various destinations on single delivery consignments, thus reducing travel time.
Method 3: Reducing trip frequency
Frequency of travel trips is reduced in a day or in a week, meaning there is a trade-off between transport costs and storage costs.
If frequency is reduced, then a storage facility is important as, for certain periods of time, goods will need to be stored until departure.
Delivery collaboration in transportation planning
Delivery collaboration is the cooperation between the buyer and the seller during the delivery process (SAP, 2008).
Factors of goods in the transportation system
- In-transit care
- Density
- Size and divisibility
- Stowage ability and ease of handling
- Potential liability of goods
Impact of and reducing carbon emissions
Consideration should be given to the type of interventions that will assist in the transition to reduced carbon emissions, a reduced movement of goods and people, and also a shift to low-carbon modes of transportation
