Q

State the functions of xylem tissue

A
  • Transports water/mineral ions
  • Roots absorbs these from soil
  • These travels upwards in the stem to the leaves, flower, fruits

Q

Define transpiration

A

Evaporation of water at the surfaces of mesophyll cells followed by loss of water vapor from plant leaves, through the stomata.

8
Q

Describe how water vapour loss is related to cell surfaces, air spaces and stomata

A

Plants must close their stomata in order to preserve water, usually during a period of drought. However, this prevents the release of oxygen which would become toxic if concentrate highly enough.

Q

Explain the mechanism of water uptake and movement in terms of tranpiration

A

Water is not pushed from roots up to leaves, it is pulled by evaporation of water, is is pulled up by the xylem in stem from roots to leaves(transpiration pull) ,drawing cohesive water molecules up the plant
