Reproduction Flashcards
Define asexual reproduction
The process resulting in the production of genetically identical offspring from one parent.
Define sexual reproduction
The process involving the fusion of haploid nuclei to form a diploid zygote and the production of genetically dissimilar offspring.
Describe function of sepal
Protects the unopened flower
Describe function of petal
Maybe brightly colored to attract insects
Describe function of anther
Produces the male sex cells(pollen)
Describe function of stigma
Top of female part, collects pollen grain
Describe function of ovary
Ovules are inside the ovary
Define pollination
The transfer of pollen grains from the male part of the plant (anther or stamen) to the female part of the plant (stigma).
Function of the testes
Male sex organs which produces sperm or male hormone testosterone.
Describe the function of scrotum
A sac which hangs outside the body. This keeps the testes at cooler temperature as sperm cells (needs to be cooler 37) to develop properly and be stored
Define sperm duct
A tube that connects tubules to urethra
Function of prostate gland
Secretes mucus/sugars which sperm cells use as source of energy for tehir respiration
Define placenta
The site of exchange of oxygen and nutrients for Co2 and other wastes, they diffuse between fetal blood and maternal blood.
Function of umbilical cord
Attaches the fetus to the placenta and contains blood vessels to transport blood to and from the placenta.
The amnion sac makes…..
Amniotic fluid to surround and protect the fetus against mechanical damage
