Transport in the body Flashcards
Describe what our circulatory or transport system is made up of.
Heart, arteries, veins, capillaries
Explain the need for a transport system.
To move materials from one place to another.
Describe the composition of blood.
plasma is the liquid part of blood, it dissolves chemicals around the body, red blood cells, carry oxygen to the necessary parts of the body, white blood cells fight infection, platelets, help form blood clots and prevent loss of blood
State the role of the blood.
Brings oxygen and nutrients to all the parts of the body so they can keep working
List the types of blood vessels in the body.
Arteries, veins, capillaries.
Describe the structure and function of each blood vessel.
Arteries = carry blood away from heart they are strong due to high blood pressure
Veins = carry blood to the heart, weaker due to lower blood pressure
Capillaries = Allow materials to pass into and out of the capillaries. Thin and weak.
Describe the structure of the heart.
Chambers = the different areas in the heart (top 2 are atria) (bottom two are ventricles)
Septum = muscular wall inside the heart
Heart valves = valves in the heart that make sure blood flows only one way.
Label a diagram of the heart and state the function of each part of the heart.
draw diagram
Describe how blood flows through the heart and around the body. Draw a diagram
pg 59 learn off by heart
Explain what causes a pulse and what factors affect the pulse rate.
When blood is pumped through arteries the pressure causes the arteries to expand causing a pulse. This can rise due to cells in our body needing more oxygen when we exercise.
What happens to blood in different parts of the body.
