Particle in solution Flashcards
What is a solute and give example
A substance that is dissolved in a solution
eg : salt dissolves in water
What is a solvent and give examples
The substance that does the dissolving in a solution
eg; water H20
what a solution is and give examples
A solution is when 2 substances mix completely together through each other
eg : oxygen dissolves into water to allow fish to breathe.
What are the differences between a concentrated and a dilute solution
concentrated = lots of solute dissolved in the solvent
dilute = very little solute dissolved in the solvent
Explain the terms soluble and insoluble
Soluble = can dissolve into a liquid
Insoluble = cant dissolve into a liquid
What is a saturated solution
A solution in which the maximum amount of solvent has been dissolved
Describe how to separate mixtures using filtration, evaporation and distillation?
Filtration = using a sieve or filter paper to allow tiny particles through but block larger ones
Evaporation = heating the solution until the liquid evaporates leaving the solute behind
Distillation = when the two substances have different boiling points which separates the substances
What is chromatography and describe how we use it
Chromatography is a simple technique through which mixtures gets separated into its components. The mixture to be separated is placed in the filter paper, and with the help of the solvents used in it, components get separated.
