Particle theory Flashcards
what is matter
Anything that occupies space ad has mass.
name the three states of matter.
solid, liquid, gasses
describe how particles are arranged in a solid liquid and gas.
In gasses particles can freely move around
In liquids particles are close to each other but are free to move past each other
In solids particles are closely packed together.
List the properties of a solid.
Fixed shape and a fixed volume.
Cannot be compressed.
High density.
List properties of a liquid.
Liquids are almost incompressible.
Fixed volume but no fixed shape
Flow from higher to lower level
List properties of a gas
they are easy to compress,
they expand to fill their containers,
they occupy far more space than the liquids or solids from which they form
explain how substances change from one state of matter to another.
Melting is when heat is applied to the material which changes its particle makeup.
Boiling is when a liquid is heated = gas
Condensation changes gas to liquid by cooling it
Freezing when a liquid is cooled and changed into a solid.
explain the term diffusion and give an example.
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to lower concentration
explain what plasma is and what its function is.
Plasma is a gas that can carry an electrical charge. it has the ability to conduct electricity.
