Q

Why do unicellular organisms rely on diffusion?

A

Responsible for moving substance in living things. Small molecules can pass through membranes, so diffusion occurs between the cytoplasm and surrounding environment. Diffusion moves oxygen and glucose into cells for respiration and removes waste.

Q

Why do multicellular organisms need transport systems?

A

To maximise diffusion (alveoli in lungs and villi in small intestine) and transport systems to move molecules throughout body

Q

What is plasma?

A

Straw coloured liquid of water and dissolved molecules, it transports the blood cells, dissolved nutrients, waste, hormones and proteins, and distributes heat

Q

How are red blood cells adapted for the blood?

A

They contain haemoglobin (iron containing protein that combines to oxygen so when there is an oxygen decrease they release it), biconcave to increase SA:V and decrease distance to centre of cell,no nucleus so more haemoglobin can be packed in

Q

What is a red blood cell?

A

Highly specialised cell made in the bone marrow that live for 100 days before being destroyed by the liver or spleen and transport oxygen
