Transport in Humans Flashcards
What is the function of a transport system in humans?
transports substances (e.g. oxygen) around the body
What is the pathway of blood in the right side of the heart?
vena cava, right atrium, tricuspid valve, right ventricle, semi-lunar valves, pulmonary artery
What is the pathway of blood in the left side of the heart?
pulmonary vein, left atrium, bicuspid valve, left ventricle, semi-lunar valves, aorta
Why is the left ventricle wall very thick?
high blood pressure - oxygenated blood
What does it mean by double and closed circulatory system?
double - blood flows through the heart twice in one complete circuit
closed - blood flows through the body in closed vessels (arteries + veins)
How is an artery structured?
thick outer wall, thick layer of elastic and muscular tissue
How is a vein structured?
thin outer wall, thin layer of elastic and muscular tissue, semi-lunar valves
How is a capillary structured?
wall is one cell thick - site of exchange of materials via diffusion
What are the function of the valves?
ensure blood flows in the correct direction
How does exercise effect our heart rate?
increases heart rate - more blood is supplied to muscles to meet respiration demand
How does adrenaline effect our heart rate?
increases heart rate
What controls our change in heartrate?
nerve impulses from the medulla (in brain)
BLOOD VESSELS: heart to kidney
renal artery
BLOOD VESSELS: kidney to heart
renal vein
BLOOD VESSELS: heart to liver
hepatic artery
