Transport and Water Flow in Plants Flashcards
What is the job of the lungs?
To transfer oxygen to the blood and to remove waste CO2 from it.
Where does gas exchange take place?
Alveoli.
How are alveoli well-adapted?
- Enormous surface area
- Moist lining to dissolve gases
- Thin walls
- Good blood supply
What are villi?
Tiny projections on the inside of the small intestine.
How are villi well-adapted?
- Single layer of surface cells
2. Good blood supply to help absorption
How does digested food move into the blood?
Diffusion and active transport.
What are root hair cells?
Long “hairs” on the surface of plant roots.
Why is active transport used in root hair cells?
The concentration of minerals is usually higher in the cell than in the soil.
What is different about active transport?
- Goes against concentration gradient
2. Requires energy
Where does active transport take place in humans?
- Taking in glucose in the gut
2. Kidney tubules
What do phloem tubes transport?
Food substances - mainly dissolved sugars.
What are phloem tubes made of?
Columns of living cells with small holes in the ends.
Where do phloem transport from and to?
From leaves to growing regions and storage organs.
Which direction do phloem transport in?
Both directions.
What do xylem tubes transport?
Water and minerals.
