Biofuels Flashcards
What is fermentation?
When bacteria or yeast break sugars down by anaerobic respiration.
How does yeast make ethanol?
The break down of glucose by anaerobic respiration.
What is the equation for the break down of glucose?
Glucose –> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide + Energy
What is the mixture of ethanol and petrol called?
Gasohol.
What can be used instead of glucose?
Maize starch (carbohydrase).
What is biogas made up of?
70% methane and 30% carbon dioxide.
What is used to make biogas on a large scale?
Sludge waste.
Why do biogas generators need to be kept at constant temperature?
To allow microogranisms to continue respiring.
What are the two types of biogas generators?
Continuous and batch.
Why can’t biogas be stored as a liquid?
Needs to high a pressure.
What can biogas be used for?
- Heating
- Cooking
- Lighting
- Power a turbine
How do batch generators work?
- Small batches
- Manually loaded up
- By-products cleared away
How do continuous generators work?
- Operate all the time
- Continuously fed in
- Biogas produced at steady rate
What does a simple biogas generator need?
- Inlet for waste material
- Outlet for digested material to be removed
- Outlet for biogas to be piped out
Why are continuous generators better than batch generators?
They’re more convenient, as they don’t have to be loaded, emptied or cleaned.
