Transport Across Membranes Flashcards
What is the cell membrane made of?
Phospholipids and Proteins
What does selectively permeable mean?
only small, soluble substances such as oxygen and glucose can pass through
Diffusion
Passive process where molecules move from an area of high concentration to a low concentration, along a concentration gradient until they are evenly spread.
Why is diffusion important?
to allow uptake of raw materials and edit of waste materials.
Osmosis
passive process, where water molecules move from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration, through a selectively permeable, until they are evenly spread.
Plant cells placed in pure water
take in water by osmosis, become turgid
Animal cells placed in pure water
take in water by osmosis, due to lack of cell wall they swell up and burst
plant cell in string salt or sucrose solution
lose water by osmosis, plasmolysed
Animal cell in strong salt or sucrose solution.
lose water by osmosis, shrink
What are diffusion and osmosis both?
passive processes
Active Transport
When substances and ions move against the concentration gradient, move from a low concentration to a high concentration, requires energy
