Producing New Cells Flashcards
1
Q
diploid
A
- cell with 2 full sets of chromosomes
- skin cells & stomach cells ~ animals
- root hair cells & palisade mesophyll ~ plants
2
Q
haploid
A
- cell with 1 full set of chromosomes
- sex cells ~ sperm and eggs
- pollen and ovules
3
Q
Stage 1 Mitosis
A
Chromosomes begin to appear as threadlike structures
4
Q
Stage 2 Mitosis
A
The chromosomes ( now chromatids ) now appear as double threads joined at the centromere
5
Q
Stage 3 Mitosis
A
Pair of chromatids line up along the equator of the cell. Spindle fibres attach themselves to the centromere.
6
Q
Stage 4 Mitosis
A
The chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell.
7
Q
Stage 5 Mitosis
A
Two new nuclei are formed.
8
Q
Stage 6 Mitosis
A
The cytoplasm divides to form two new cells.
9
Q
- What are daughter cells identical to?
- What does this allow them to do?
A
- mother cells
- function in exactly the same way
