The smaller the organism the larger the surface area to volume ratio .

A
A large surface area to volume ratio ensures a high and efficient metabolic rate as a large surface area allows more surface are for oxygen and nutrients and a low volume creates a shorter distance for nutrients and oxygen to travel.
