prokaryotic cells Flashcards
How do prokaryotic cells compare to eukaryotic cells in terms of size?
Prokaryotic cells are much smaller than eukaryotic cells
Give three differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
cytoplasm that lacks membrane-bound organelles
smaller ribosomes
no nucleus; instead they have a single circular DNA molecule that is free in the cytoplasm and is not associated with proteins
a cell wall that contains murein, a glycoprotein
What do only prokaryotic cells have ?
one or more plasmids
a capsule surrounding the cell
one or more flagella
What are viruses ?
Viruses are acellular and non-living. The structure of virus particles to include genetic material, capsid and attachment protein.
What are the different parts of cell organisation ?
cell- tissue - organ - organ system
What is binary fission ?
How prokaryotes reproduce asexual reproduction
What is the process of binary fission ?
- Circular DNA replicates and attaches to cell surface membrane
- Plasmid replicate - if present
- Cell membrane grows - separating the DNA . Cell pinches in the middle - splitting into 2 cells.
- Two genetically identical daughter cells are produced
What is circular DNA ?
What is the small (70s) ribosome ?
What is a capsule ?
What is the flagellum ?
What is the plasmid ?
What does the capsid do ?
What do the attachment proteins do ?
What do the genetic material do ?
