Transport Across Cell Membrane Flashcards
What is the Cell Membrane made up of?
Proteins and Phospholipids (lipids)
What is Passive Transport?
Occurs down a concentration gradient and Doesn’t require energy.
What is Diffusion?
Passive Transport. Movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from HIGH to LOW.
What is Osmosis?
The movement of water molecules from HIGH to LOW concentration through a selectively permeable membrane.
What Happens to an Animal Cell in Low Water Concentration?
Water molecules will move INTO the cell and it will burst.
What Happens to an Animal Cell in High Water Concentration?
Water molecules will move OUT of the cell and it will shrink.
What Happens to an Plant Cell in Low Water Concentration?
Water molecules move INTO the cell and it will become turgid.
What Happens to an Plant Cell in High Water Concentration?
Water molecules move OUT of the cell and become plasmolysed.
What is Active Transport?
Moves molecules / ions against the concentration gradient from LOW to HIGH. Requires energy.
