Respiration Flashcards
What is Respiration?
The process that releases chemical energy in the body. Release of chemical energy from glucose. Cells convert food into ATP.
What is ADP?
When the bonds in the ATP molecule breaks they release energy and form ADP and phosphate (pi).
3 Uses of ATP
- Active Transport
- Heat
- Nerve Impulses
What is Glycolysis?
A 6-Carbon glucose molecule is broken down by enzyme controlled reactions into 3-Carbon molecules of pyruvate. Occurs in cytoplasm.
What is Aerobic Respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen > Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
Stage One of Aerobic Respiration
Glucose is broken down into two molecules of pyruvate. Every glucose molecule that is broken down also makes 2 ATP molecules.
Stage Two of Aerobic Respiration
A pyruvate molecule enters the mitochondria and is broken down because of oxygen, this produces carbon dioxide and water. The energy released from each pyruvate molecule produces a large number of ATP.
What is Fermentation?
The breakdown of glucose when no oxygen present.
What is Fermentation in Animals?
Glucose > Lactic Acid + Small Amount of ATP
What is Fermentation in Plants?
Glucose > Carbon Dioxide + Ethanol + Energy
