Transport Flashcards
What are the factors affecting choice of route
Physical factors: relief (steep slopes) water (rivers marshland) natural beauty (woods parklands)
Human factors: distance (shortest route) settlements (pass through/ bypass small villages/ large towns), private property
What cause traffic problems
Too many cars, too many road junctions, too much through traffic, unsuitable roads, on street parking, rush-hour traffic, dirty fuels
What are the solutions to traffic problems
Encourage private transport: better traffic management (roundabouts/ one-way systems/ traffic lights), more off street parking, urban motorways to improve traffic flow, bypasses to keep through traffic out of towns, discourage private transport: improve public transport (reduce fares, increase speed and comfort develop real roots like the London underground), Park and ride schemes (leave car on town outskirts, travel by free bus to Centre, make car parking difficult (increase charges, reduced spaces)
