Energy Flashcards
What sources of energy can only be used once
Coal, gas, nuclear, wood and biomass
What energy is made from fossilised plants and animals
Coal, oil and gas
What are the advantages of non renewable fuel sources
Use existing technology, easy to store, highly concentrated - produces a lot of electricity
Disadvantages of non renewable fuel sources
Produces green house gases/nuclear waste, high running costs, limited supply - will run out
What are renewable fuel sources
Solar, tidal, hydro-electric, geothermal, wood, biomass
Advantages of renewable fuel sources
Cheaper to install and operate, generate energy for local area, low pollution
Disadvantages of renewable fuel sources
Produce less electricity, unreliable supply, harder to store
What are green house gases
Gases in the earths atmosphere that allow the Suns heat in but absorb some of the heat trying to get out eg carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFCs
What is global warming
When human activities (eg burning fossil fuels) release green house gases that absorb heat and radiate it back to the surface, causing the earth to slowly warm up
