Transport Flashcards
What is osmosis?
The net movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a semi-permeable membrane without the need for ATP.
What is active transport?
The movement of particles across the membrane up a concentration gradient.
It is an active process if?
Energy is needed
What is Equilibrium?
The concentration of molecules on either side of the membrane are equal to the particles that will continue to move both ways.
What is a passive transport?
The movement of ions and molecules down to a concentration gradient without any energy required.
What is semipermeable?
a membrane that allows certain molecules to enter and exit the cell
It is made up of two layers of small molecules called:
phospholipids
It is described as Isotonic
the solutions at both sides in which the membrane in both directions can reach an equilibrium
What is Isotonic?
a solution that has the same concentration of water and solutes as a cell’s cytoplasm
