Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
A metabolic process that occurs in all organisms
Where does respiration happen?
In a cell’s mitochondria at all times
Anaerobic respiration equation:
C6H12O6 -> CO2 + lactic acid + 2 ATP
Aerobic respiration equation:
C6H12O6 +O2 -> CO2 +H2O + 36 ATP + [heat]
What is Anaerobic respiration?
a process that occurs in living cells to release energy from glucose without oxygen
Where does Anaerobic happen?
In the cytoplasm which converts glucose into carbo dioxide, lactic acid and two ATP
Advantages of Anaerobic
fast, does not require oxygen whereas ATP can continue to be produced
Disadvantages of Anaerobic
low yield of ATP, byproduct of lactic acid, insufficient concentrations and toxic which inhibits muscle contractions and cramps
What is Aerobic respiration?
a chemical process that occurs in living cells to produce energy with presence of oxygen
Where does Aerobic respiration happen?
In the mitochondria cells, converting glucose and oxygen to carbon dioxide, water, 36 ATP and heat
What is required to break glucose?
Needs O2 to complete the breakdown of glucose to CO2 and H2O
What is the additional requirement of Aerobic
Oxygen
3 main enzyme- controlled pathways of Aerobic
- Glycolysis
- Krebs cycle
- Electron transfer chain
