Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
collection of enzyme chemical reactions that uses energy from sunlight to combine carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose that can be used for cellular respiration
What is sunlight’s equation?
CO2 + H2O –> C6H12O6 + O2
What are the two stages of Photosynthesis? And what is it also known as?
Light-dependent and Light-independent reaction. Also known as Calvin Cycle.
What is Light-dependent reaction?
occurs during daylight hours, takes place on the thylakoid member of chloroplast.
What is absorbed on the Light-dependent reaction?
chlorophyll pigments in chloroplasts absorbs light energy to break H2O into O2 and into H+
What is Light-independent reaction?
The combining of CO2 and the H+ from the light-dependent phase to produce C6H12O6 within the chloroplast’s stroma.
Where does the light-independent take place?
takes place in the stroma inside the chloroplast.
What are the three factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis?
Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature
What is the equation for Photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O -> (chlorophyll and sunlight) CO2H12O6 + 6O2
What is the requirement for the breaking of H2O?
Sunlight
Why does the photosynthesis rate plateaus at a certain point?
Due to the chloroplasts plant cells becoming saturated
What happens between the relationship of temperature and reaction rates?
The reaction rate will increase with temperature to a point and fall dramatically as temperature increases.
What causes the trend of temperature to rise, peak and fall?
Due to the biological nature of enzyme, increased temperature increase the overall energy of the particles and the chances of substrates encountering an enzyme’s active site.
What does the breaking of enzyme means?
There is a loss in the necessary catalyst for photosynthetic reactions in both light dependent and independent reactions causing the rate of photosythesis to drop.
