TRANSPORT Flashcards
1
Q
distance
A
how far an object can move
2
Q
speed
A
distance travelled per unite time
3
Q
velocity
A
speed in a particular direction (vector)
4
Q
acceleration
A
change of velocity over time
5
Q
balanced forces
A
- resultant force is 0
- the object will remain at rest of already at rest
6
Q
unbalanced force
A
- objects will have a resultant force on it that will accelerate it (positively or negatively)
7
Q
force diagram
A
illustrate forces using arrows to indicate both magnitude and direction
8
Q
free body diagrams
A
simplified visual representation of forces which do not include magnitudes
9
Q
engine
A
mechanical device that converts forms of energy
10
Q
internal combustion engine
A
- fuel is burned inside of the engine
- a controlled explosion drives a piston up and down a cylinder, and this motion is converted into motion of the wheels
11
Q
induction motors
A
- engines used for electric vehicles
- series of rings with copper wires (stator) conducts electricity at variable rates to create a rotating magnetic field
- the field induces the rotor with an electrical current causing it to spin and driving the motion of the wheels
- pressing the accelerator will change the frequency of current, increasing the spinning of the rotor
12
Q
turbines
A
- used for aircraft’s
- fan blades spin at high speeds and compress the air
- fuel is injected into the compressed air and an electric spark ignites it
- the burning gases expand and are forced out through the nozzle at the back of the turbine
- the action of gases shooting outwards causes the engine to move forward
