Transport Flashcards
How many times does the blood go through the heart in a single circulation?
Once
How many times does the blood go through the heart in double circulation?
Twice
What type of blood does the heart always receive first?
Oxygenated
What takes blood away from the heart?
Arteries
What takes blood to the heart?
Veins
What happens when blood enters an artery?
The high pressure distends the wall of the artery, stretching the elastic tissue.
What produces the pulse?
The recoil of elastic tissue squeezes the blood further along and creates the pulse.
How many polypeptide chains is Haemoglobin made up of?
4- two α and two β
Why do the roots of a plant absorb the water and minerals?
They have a large SA
What are the two types of transport in plants?
1- water +minerals in a one way flow from the roots to the shoots+leaves
2- organic substances in a multi-directional flow
What is the structure of xylem cells in plant stems and roots?
they are in a column
What structure transports organic substances up + down the plant?
Phloems
What does phloem tissue consist of?
Sieve tubes and companion cells
What are the two areas that translocation relies on?
The source and sink
What does the source do?
produces large amounts of organic molecules, then actively transports them into sieve tube cells by their companion cells.
this makes the water potential more negative so water moves in via osmosis, which increases the hydrostatic pressure
