Transmission between neurons Flashcards
What is the synapse?
Small gap between neurons
What are neurotransmitters?
Chemicals that carry information across the synapse
Describe the process of a transmission between neurons
- Action potental arrives at the terminal
- Change in potential causes calcium voltage-gated channels to open
- Calcium in the terminal causes vesicles to fuse with the presynaptic membrane
- Neurotransmitter is released into the cleft via exocytosis
- Neurotransmitter diffuses across and binds with receptors
- New action potential is triggered in the postsynaptic neuron
What are the 3 methods to remove a neurotransmitter from the cleft?
Simple diffusion
Active re-uptake
Deactivation by enzyme
How does curare work?
Blocks action of acetylcholine and paralyses prey
Where is acetylcholine found?
The brain and neuromuscular junctions
What kind of receptors does acetylcholine bind to?
Nicotinic
What kind of action is acetylcholine?
Fast and excitatory
What are other names for fast and slow in terms of neurotrasnmitter action?
Ionotropic and metabotropic
Where is serotonin found?
The brain
How does serotonin cause an action potential?
- Binds to receptors
- Triggers G-protein
- Second messenger opens ion channels
What else can serotonin do?
Activate genes
Change the synapse
Cause learning
What kind of action is serotonin?
Slow and excitatory
What does GABA stand for?
Gamma-aminobutyric acid
Where is GABA found?
The brain
