translation Flashcards
where does translation occur
at the ribosomes in the cytoplasm
what happens during TRanslation
during translation amino acids join together to make a poly peptide chain, following the sequence of codons carried by the mRNA
1st step (6 steps TOTAL)
mRNA attaches to a ribosome
and tRNA carries amino acids to the ribosomes
2nd step translation
the anti codon on the tRNA attaches to the start codon on the mRNA by complementary base pairing
3rd step translation
THEN
a second tRNA molecule attaches itself to the next codon on the mRNA in the same way
4th step translation
rRNA catalyses the formation of a peptide bond between the 2 amino acids attached to tRNA
the first tRNA moves away leaving its amino acid behind
5th step translation
a 3rd tRNA binds to the next codon on the mRNA
then the 2nd tRNA moves away
6th step translation
This process continues
producing a poly-peptide chain until there is a STOP CODON on the mRNA
in which the polypeptide chain moves away from the ribosome and translation is complete
