Transitions Flashcards

1
Q

what are transitions?

A

They describe how video moves from the end of one clip to the start of the next - the segue between clips.

Fundamentally we have been creating transitions i.e. from making cuts in source monitor and putting in the sequence.

Our initial cut edits for clips i.e. between in/out points, once in the timeline, effectively are bare transitions between clips.

Q

We can leave a cut as it is for transition - but sometimes it’s nice to smooth over transitions, perhaps with a dissolve - why? (2)

A
  1. to make a transition smoother when it would otherwise be a bit jarring/ brutal/rough/ unprofessional looking;
    AND/OR:
  2. to draw attention to a cut.

Q

What type of transition is a ‘cut’?

A

It’s simply where you decide to end one clip and start the next clip.
It doesn’t employ any effects.

Q

How do you apply a transition other than the default?

A

Either:
1. Project Panel>Effects>Video Transitions>browse to the one you want and drag to the transition.
2. Or if you know the name of it -
Project Panel>Effects>type dissolve (e.g) in the search box, and drag to transition.

You don’t have to highlight the transition first.

Q

For a good dissolve your clips need to have *****

What are they?

A

handles

There needs to be spare footage after the out point of your first clip and before your ‘in’ point in the following clip so you have some media to dissolve from and to dissolve to.

i.e. The in and out points creating the cut in the source monitor being wider than the in and out point of the same clip that you wish to be visible in the in the timeline i.e. in the final show.

Q

If there is a triangle on both clips at the edit point and you go ahead and apply the transition PP will create extra media by *** some frames to get the full 1 second transition. This will be indicated by cross hatching on the transition, on the clip that has no handle.

Q

What consideration to handles should be given when shooting the video?

A

Well.. you need them to effectively start, transition through, and finish a film. Without handles it is very hard to edit a movie, whether you just use raw cuts or transition effects.
