Basics Flashcards
Main panels, importing, initial cuts in source monitor
What’s the main purpose of the source monitor?
It’s where you decide in and out points of a video clip - you don’t want to put the whole clip most of the time into the program monitor/ sequence.
And you could be taking several parts of one clip into a sequence.
What’s the purpose of the ‘program monitor’?
To critique the finished show i.e. exactly what people will see.
i.e. the results of the timeline/sequence.
What is the ‘timeline’?
A graphical view of a show from start to finish including all it’s elements.
Ross: a story board built by dropping in your chosen media, video, styles, graphics, audio.
What is the ‘timeline’ otherwise known as?
A ‘sequence’.
What is the ‘project pane’? (3)
It’s where you assemble assets. 1, import 2, organise into folders 3, view timeline & adjustment layer icons.
It’s where you import all media for a project and where you decide how to store/organise it, i.e. folder structure, as well as non-imported items including timeline icons & adjustment layers.
Why should you keep all your media in the same local parent folder?
Because when you import media via the project panel you are not actually importing the media into the project, you importing the address to the location of the media.
So if you move the media the project will no longer work. Best to move all assets/media to the project parent folder.
I.e. to ensure the integrity of the video project.
How do you create an edit starting in the source monitor?
Set your in and out points then drag the file into either the program monitor or timeline.
Project Panel:
how do you open a folder (bin) in situ, so that the project panel only show the contents of the bin and hides the other folders?
CTRL + DC
making it easier to deal with a bin with several layers of folder - so u can precisely CONTROL what u see in a folder
Source Panel: how do you quickly clear a pair of in & out points?
RC>clear in & out
Working in the source panel gives you far more control.
It tells you the length of the shot (BR).
The number BL of panel, will either start from absolute zero or will be a timecode.
The number sequence is: hrs;mins;secs;***** .
frames.
What is a ‘frame’?
Video is filmed at different frame rates, so either, 24,25 or 30 parts of a second. ( So there are 25 frames per second with film shot at 25fps, and you can move from frame to frame using the transport bar or left/right arrow keys).
How can you loop a section of a clip in source monitor?
You must first set I & O points; the click on the wrench, BR of source panel for setting> Loop.
Which are the ‘transport keys’ ?
J, K & L
Mnem: ‘J’ for Journey
What does transport key: J do?
J – reverse play (press J again to speed up) - almost like a ‘U’ turn, a ‘J’ turn, turning around and going backwards.
What does transport key: K do?
K – pause - “ok, let’s pause and take a break”
