Transient ischemic attack Flashcards
TIA presentation?
sudden onset speech arrest and right arm weakness that resolved after 30 min, along with noncontrast ct scan of the head likely had a transient ischemic attack in the left middle cerebral artery blood supply distribution.
multiple sclerosis (MS) vs TIA?
pt with ms: new focal neurological symptoms may not always be due to acute ms attack, neurologic deficits related to acute demyelinating plaque of ms usually lasts days to weeks .
opposite, TIA symptoms lasts less than 24 hrs in a pt with multiple vascular risk factors (HTN, hyperlipidemia, tobacco use).
treatment?
modifying identifiable risk factors to prevent recurrent TIA or stroke, including discontinuing tobacco use, initiating aspirin, starting statin for hyperlipidemia and reducing blood pressure.
