Transfusion Reactions Flashcards
What is the most dangerous transfusion reaction?
ABO incompatibility
Can be fatal.
What antibody is associated with delayed reactions?
IgG
What antibody is associated with immediate reactions?
IgM
How are mild transfusion reactions treated?
Paracetamol/Antihistamines
How does TACO present?
Transfusion assisted circulatory overload (TACO) presents with respiratory distress with raised BP, raised JVP and a positive fluid balance.
How is TACO treated?
Oxygen, diuretics and supportive care.
How is ABO incompatibility treated?
Stop transfusion, give oxygen and fluids.
Perform FBC, coagulation screen and renal function.
Test blood typing again (look for ABO and RhD discrepancies from that of the blood given).
