Transformers Flashcards
Step- up transformers
Step the voltage up. They have more turns on the secondary coil.
Step- down transformers
Step the voltage down. They have more turns on the primary coil.
What do transformers work by?
Electromagnetic induction
How do transformers work?
The primary coil produces a magnetic field which stays in the iron core, meaning nearly all of it is passed on, hardly anys lost.
Because of the AC in the primary coil…
the iron core is constantly changing direction
What flows in the iron core?
Magnetic field…NOT current
Transformer equation
primary voltage = no. of turns on primary
——————– ——————————
secondar voltage no. of turns on secondary
Why do we need step up/down transformers?
You need a high voltage or current to transmit a lot of power but current is easily lost o high voltage is better.
