Circular motion Flashcards
If an object is moving in a circle it is…
constantly changing direction therefore it is constantly accelerating.
What is the force that keeps things constantly moving in a circle called?
centripetal
The faster an objects moving in a circle, the
bigger the centripetal force must be to keep it moving in a circle.
the heavier the object moving in a circle, the
bigger the centripetal force mut be
You need a larger force to keep something moving in a
smaller circle
An orbit is possible when..
there is a balance between the forward motion of the object and the gravitational force pulling it inwards.
If the balance in an orbit broke then…
the smaller object would fly off at a tanget.
Gravity decreases quickly as you get
further away
the closer you get to a star or planet the
stronger the force of attraction
To counteract the stronger gravity, the planets nearer the sun
must move faster, covering their orbit quicker.
4 purposes for artificial satellites
monitoring of the Earth(weather climate etc.)
Communications (phone, tv)
space research
spying
Geostationary orbit
high orbits over the equator taking exactly 24 hours, so they stay above the same point. (communication)
Low polar orbit
Goes over both poles whilst the Earth rotates beneath it, just takes a few hours, spying photos, etc.
