star and galaxies Flashcards
What do stars form from?
clouds of dust and gas
How do stars form?
- dust and gas spiral together due to gravitational attraction.
- Gravity compresses matter so intense heat develops and nuclear fusion starts.
- other lumps may develop= future planets
What was the only gas at the beginning of the universe?
hydrogen
What happens in the cores of stars?
hydrogen nuclei undergo nuclear fusion creating helium nuclei.
What happens in Red giants?
Helium (no hydrogen is left at this point) nuclear fuse to form heavier elements.
What happens when helium runs out?
carbon oxygen and combine to make silicon and the biggest stars keep fusing until they have made iron.
What happens at the end of a stars life?
Massive stars will explode, heavy nuclei will combine and make all the elements in the universe.
Dust and gas from supernova explosions can form…
new stars and planets forming 2nd generation star systems containing heavier elements and hydrogen.
Life cycle of stars
- Formation from gas and dust.
- Protostar
- Main sequence star
- Red giant
small stars
5.white dwarf to black dwarf
big stars - supernova to neutron star or black hole OR new planetary nebula and solar system
What causes the gas clouds to spiral in?
Gravity
Nuclear fusion in the long stable period provides…
an outward pressure to balance the force of gravity
What is the long stable period called?
Main sequence star.
Neutron star
A very dense core
