Transformers Flashcards
What type of current makes a transformer work?
AC current.
How is voltage produced on a transformers secondary coil?
The changing magnetic field in the core cuts across the secondary coil, inducing a voltage.
Give two types of transformer construction.
Shell and core.
What is the purpose of a transformer?
To raise or lower the value of an AC current.
What is the purpose of a laminated soft iron core?
To achieve the maximum transfer between primary and secondary windings.
If there are more coils in the secondary windings, what type of transformer is it and what will happen to the output voltage?
It’s a step-up transformer so the output voltage will be higher than the input voltage
State the output voltage equation.
Output Voltage = (Number of Secondary Turns)/(Number of Primary Turns) x Input Voltage
What is the purpose of a centre tapped transformer?
It effectively reduces the electric shock hazard by halving the voltage.
State the input and output cables on HM ships.
Input: Red L1, Yellow L2, Blue L3
Out: Red A, Yellow B, Blue C
State the new colours for cables.
Brown, black, grey.
