Magnetism Flashcards
Where is magnetism found in its natural form?
In an iron ore called magnetite.
What is a magnet?
A material which produces a force of attraction.
What are lines of force around a magnet known as?
Magnetic field or magnetic flux.
What direction do the lines of magnetic field travel?
From north to south.
What are magnetic materials?
Materials capable of being magnetised.
What will magnetic lines of force never do?
Unite or cross.
How do two like poles and two unlike poles react to each other?
Like poles will repel each other. Unlike poles will attract each other.
What can magnetic lines of force pass through?
Any material, but they pass more readily through some than others.
Name two types of magnets.
Bar magnet
Horseshoe magnet
What are temporary magnets?
Materials which are easily magnetised but become demagnetised once the magnetic influence has been removed.
What is a permanent magnet?
Material which, on becoming magnetised, themselves become magnetised and retain their magnetic properties after the influence has been removed.
What is induced magnetism?
When a piece of unmagnetised material is placed in the magnetic field of a permanent magnet and it becomes magnetised.
What is electro-magnetic induction?
When an electric current flows through a conductor. A magnetic field is produced around the conductor.
What 3 requirements are needed for induction?
Relative movement
Magnetic field
Conductor
What materials will produce a stronger magnet when mixed with steel?
Aluminium, cobalt, nickel
