AC Power Flashcards
What does AC stand for?
Alternating current
What direction does AC travel through a conductor?
Both, it alternates
Name two advantages of AC over DC
Wiring and equipment is lighter
Voltages can be provided at different values easily, using a generator.
What is frequency?
The speed at which AC changes direction.
What is amplitude?
The level to which the voltage or current rises to.
How are AC cycles per second expressed?
In Hertz
What are the values of ships main electrical supplies?
450 V, 3 phase, 60 Hertz
What is the frequency equation?
Time (seconds) = 1/Frequency
What is the unit of inductance? And what are more common values?
Henry
Millihenry (mH)
Microhenry
What do transformers do?
Change size of voltage or current without loss of power.
What is a disadvantage of DC?
When power is transmitted over long distances, losses occur due to the resistance of the cables and size of the current being carried.
What happens when the size of the current is reduced?
The losses are reduced.
What is a length of coiled wire called?
Basic inductor.
What is a cycle?
The movement in one direction and then the other, a full revolution of a generator.
