Transformations Flashcards
What is a Translation?
A Translation is where you move a shape from one point to another without changing it.
How can you describe a translation?
You can use vector notation (x y) to express how in the x direction it goes and how far in the y direction.
What is a Reflection?
A Reflection is where a shape is reflected in a certain line so that the nearest point to the line is still the nearest point to the line.
How can you describe a reflection?
You can simply describe the line that the shape is reflected in e.g. y=x, x=2 etc.
What is a Rotation?
A Rotation is where you rotate a shape around a certain point a certain number of degrees.
How can you describe a rotation?
You can describe a rotation by expressing: what point it rotated around, which direction it rotated in and how far it rotated.
What is an Expansion?
It is where you expand the shape by a certain amount in a certain direction.
How can you describe an expansion?
You can specify the degree by which the line lengths changed and the point around which it expanded.
What is an origin?
(0,0)
What are congruent shapes?
Shapes that are the same size and shape.
What are similar shapes?
Shapes that are the same shape.
If the scale factor of the length between two similar shapes is a, what will the scale factor be between the area and the volume?
A = a^2 V = a^3
