Transformations Flashcards
Define a transformation.
An operation which maps the pre-image onto the figure called the image. A transformation may change position, orientation, or size of a figure.
What is a rigid transformation?
The pre-image is congruent to the image. Includes translations, rotations, and reflections.
What is a translation?
A shift vertically and/or horizontally.
What does h represent in equations?
Horizontal shift
How do you represent vertical shift in equations?
k
Define vector.
A quantity with both direction (+ or -) and magnitude (scale)
What are the points a vector is drawn between?
An initial point and a terminal point
What is the coordinate notation of a translation?
(x , y) —> (x + n1 , y + n2)
What is the component form of a vector?
<h, k>
What’s the shortcut to find an image coordinate when reflected over the x-axis?
(x , -y)
What’s the shortcut to find an image coordinate when reflected over the y-axis?
(-x , y)
What’s the shortcut to find an image coordinate when reflected across line y = x?
(y , x)
What’s the shortcut to find an image coordinate when reflected over line y = -x?
(-y , -x)
What is the shortcut to rotate a figure 270 degrees about the origin?
(y , -x)
What is the shortcut to rotate a figure 90 degrees about the origin?
(-y , x)
