Transfer of Heat Flashcards
What is radiation?
Radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves.
What states of matter do the electromagnetic waves pass through?
Solids, liquids, gasses, a vacuum like space
What is this energy often called?
Radiant energy
What is an insulator?
A material which does not allow heat to pass through it easily
What is conduction?
The transfer of heat by direct contact between two objects or particles.
What is a conductor?
Materials that transfer heat easily.
What happens when you heat particles?
They expand and become less dense
What is convection?
Heat transferred by the movement of molecules within a substance
What states of matter does convection happen in?
Liquids and gasses
Why can’t convection happen in solids?
A solid’s particles can not more freely
What causes a convection current?
The difference in densities between two liquids
