Transducers Flashcards
What is a trandsducer?
Something that can change one form of energy into another
What is the direct piezoelectric effect?
Reception – Conversion of sound energy into electric energy
What is the indirect piezoelectric effect?
Transmission – converting electric energy into sound energy
What are the natural piezoelectric materials?
QRAT BLTS – quartz, rochelle salt, amber, tourmaline, berlinite, lead titanate, topaz, sucrose
What does the matching layer do?
Reduces reflection and increase sound transmission into skin – provides intermediate impedance between crystal & tissue
What does the damping layer/backing material do?
It improves detail resolution by shortening the pulse
What does the electrical wire do?
Sends voltage to and from crystals
What is the thickness of the matching layer?
1/4 wavelength
What is the matching layer made of?
Epoxy resin & aluminum powder
What is the thickness of a crystal in a probe?
1/2 wavelength
What is the damping layer made of?
Epoxy resin & tungsten or other metal powders
What is bandwidth?
range of frequencies present in a pulse
What is the center frequency?
The operating frequency of the transducer
Is broad bandwidth damped or undamped?
Damped - has many frequencies & better resolution
Is narrow bandwidth damped or undamped?
Undamped - has fewer frequencies & poor resolution
