emic vs etic
emic approach ensures culturally sensitive care by understanding the patient’s cultural specifics, while an etic approach ensures the application of universal health practices
refers to variations and differences among and between cultural groups and resulting from differences in lifeways, language, values, norms, expressions, and other cultural aspects

- Beliefs that seem bizarre or strange may be common and important to one culture
but differ greatly from other cultures - Strong ethnocentric views that can not be acted on can be harmful to other cultures
and can limit professional growth and success - Modifying or changing one’s own strong beliefs is often essential for an effective
professional relationship with clients staff and organizational systems
