Transcription - Lecture 1 Flashcards
Does translation and transcription always occur simultaneously? If not - why?
In prokaryotes - yes
In eukaryotes - no bc transcription occurs in the nucleus and translation occurs in the cytoplasm
What is the function of micro RNAs?
block expression of complementary mRNAs
What is the function of long non-coding RNAs?
to regulate gene expression by binds to mRNA or micro-RNAs
How is mRNA synthesized?
It is synthesized in the 5’ to 3’ direction but only using the 3’ to 5’ DNA template strand with help of RNA polymerase
What is the function of gRNA?
direct the insertion of uridine bases into the mRNA by a repair polymerase through complementary pairing
What does cytidine deaminase do?
Edits RNA by changing the “C” to “U”
What effect does cytidine deaminase have on the ApoB?
In the ApoB gene the CAA codon can change to a stop UAA codon which truncates the protein and gives it a different function
What is the function of the micro RNA siRNA?
binds to mRNA to inhibit translation
What is the function of the micro RNA miRNA?
binds to mRNA and causes degradation
