Transcription factors Flashcards
1
Q
define transcription factors
A
proteins that control the rate of protein synthesis by switching genes on and off
2
Q
promoter region
A
short sequence of DNA at the start of a gene
3
Q
what is an example of something which binds to the promoter region?
A
DNA/RNA polymerase
4
Q
transcription factor stages :
A
- transcription factor moves from cytoplasm into nucleus
- it binds to the promoter region
- ACTIVATORS help RNA polymerase to bind –> gene is transcribed
- REPRESSORS prevent RNA polymerase binding –> gene not transcribed
5
Q
what is oestrogen and what does it do?
A
- oestrogen is a steroid hormone
- binds to oestrogen receptor in cytoplasm
- forming oestrogen-oestrogen receptor complex, changing its shape so it becomes functional
