Transcription Flashcards
Diploid
Contain a copy of genetic information from mom and dad
Haploid
Only have one set of chromosomes or have the generic information required
ALL cells in the body
Diploid
Eggs and sperm
Haploid
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
Transcribe genes that code for large RNA molecules
Messenger RNA (mRNA)
Transcribes protein coding genes
Transfer RNA (tRNA)
Transcribes genes that code for tRNAs
RNA polymerase template moves
3’ - 5 ‘
RNA molecule is synthesized
5’ - 3’
Coding strand is a reference
5’ - 3’
What are the phases of transcription and translation
Initiation
Elongation
Termination
Initiation (transcription)
Binds to the DNA in and unwinds it
Elongation (transcription)
Moves along the DNA template and creates RNA
Termination (transcription)
When RNA polymerase reaches termination site it is released
-occurs when polyadenylation signal is transcribed
Promoter
Promotes the synthesis of the RNA
- tells the RNA polymerase where to start the transcription
- tells the RNA polymerase which DNA strand to use as a template
