Q
What is the difference between DNA and RNA?
A
- DNA has two polynucleotide strands whereas RNA only has one.
- RNA contains a ribose sugar but DNA contains a deoxyribose sugar
- RNA has the base uracil instead of thymine
2
Q
Where is the anticodon found?
A
On tRNA - which binds to the codon (triplet) on the mRNA during protein synthesis
3
Q
Where is mRNA made?
A
In the nucleus, and passes through the nuclear pores during protein synthesis
4
Q
Where is the codon found?
A
On mRNA
5
Q
Describe the process of transcription
A
1) The DNA helicase unwinds the DNA strands - causing hydrogen bonds to break
2) Free nucleotides join onto complimentary bases against one strand of DNA
3) RNA polymerase links adjacent nucleotides - creating a length of mRNA which is complimentary to the DNA template strand.
4) mRNA moves out of the nucleus
