Q

What is the difference between DNA and RNA?

A
  • DNA has two polynucleotide strands whereas RNA only has one.
  • RNA contains a ribose sugar but DNA contains a deoxyribose sugar
  • RNA has the base uracil instead of thymine

Q

Describe the process of transcription

A

1) The DNA helicase unwinds the DNA strands - causing hydrogen bonds to break
2) Free nucleotides join onto complimentary bases against one strand of DNA
3) RNA polymerase links adjacent nucleotides - creating a length of mRNA which is complimentary to the DNA template strand.
4) mRNA moves out of the nucleus
