ATP and ADP 2.1.3 c Flashcards
What does ATP stand for?
Adenosine triphosphate
What is ATP?
The chemical energy needed to fuel biological activities.
How are energy molecules in food transferred into ATP molecules?
Through two types of respiration - aerobic and anaerobic
What is phosphorylation?
When a phosphate group is added, e.g. from ADP to ATP.
How is ATP formed?
When adenosine diphosphate (ADP) is bonded to a third inorganic phosphate (Pi) using the energy released from glucose - it also uses ATP synthase.
Where does ATP store most of its energy?
In the third bond of the molecule.
When is energy released from ATP?
When the bond is broken to release the third inorganic phosphate (Pi).
What is the process from ATP-ADP called?
Hydrolysis (Adding H2O)
Name the enzyme used in the breakdown of ATP
ATPase
What is NAD, and what is it used for?
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide - a coenzyme used in respiration.
