TRANSACTIONAL MODEL OF STRESS COPING Flashcards
WHAT IS TRANSACTIONAL MODEL OF STRESS COPING?
states that stress involves an encounter between individuals and external environment
: a stress response response depends on individuals interpretation (appraisal) and ability to cope
PRIMARY APPRAISAL?
primary appraisal is an individual’s assessment on the situation
is it positive, benign or stressful
what kind of stress?
- harm/loss, threat or challenging
STRENGTH OF TRANSACTIONAL MODEL
- accounts for individual differences in response to similar situations
- human models were used in the development of the model
LIMITATION OF TRANSACTIONAL MODEL
- lack of empirical evidence
: due to the subjective nature data collected
STRATEGIES FOR COPING?
- exercise
- meditation
- social support
- alcohol/drugs
2 COPING STRATEGIES?
approach strategies
avoidance strategies
WHAT IS APPROACH STRATEGIES?
behavior that attempts to decrease the stress by finding solutions to the problem
healthy response to stress
e.g. applying for a job
WHAT IS AVOIDANCE STRATEGIES?
behavior that involves failing to engage or deal with stress by protecting oneself from psychological distress
e.g. ignoring or denying the situation
unhealthy and maladaptive
context-specific effectiveness?
when the coping strategy used is appropriate for the unique demand of the stressor
e.g. situational factors or personal characteristics
COPING FLEXIBILITY?
the ability to adjust or change one’s coping strategy depending on the unique and changing demands of a stressor
REAPPRAISAL?
involves revaluating the stressor
NON SPECIFIC VS SPECIFIC RESPONSES TO STRESSORS?
non specific: responses that are exhibit when faced with stressor (physiological response) associated when the sympathetic ns activates
specific responses: unique to the individual and are likely to be psychological responses
HARM/LOSS
CHALLENGED
THREAT
harm/loss: already happened
challenged: potential for growth
threat: might happen
SECONDARY APPRAISAL
secondary appraisal is an individual’s assessment on the situation
evaluating the ability to cope (and if we have our resources) to deal with the situation
