STRESS&GAS Flashcards
WHAT IS STRESS?
psychological or physiological response produced by internal or external stressors
: perceived as challenging or threatening to the ability to cope
EUSTRESS AND DISTRESS?
eustress: a form of stress characterized by a positive psychological state
distress: a form of stress characterized by a negative psychological state
ACUTE STRESS?
short period time of stress (brief in duration)
CHRONIC STRESS?
a form of stress that endures for a long period of time
- heavily impacts health and wellbeing
e.g. ongoing stress at work
WHAT IS STRESSOR?
stimulus that prompts the stress response
: can either be internal or external
INTERNAL STRESSORS?
a stimulus from within the body that prompts the stress response
: hunger, illness (physiological)
: low self-esteem (psychological)
EXTERNAL STRESSORS?
a stimulus from outside the body that prompts the stress response
: upcoming sac
: being over-workd
EXAMPLES OF PHYSIOLOGICAL (body) STRESS RESPONSES?
- skin rashes
- colds/flu
- hear attack
- headaches
EXAMPLS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS RESPONSES? BEO
b: behavioral
- changes in eating habits
- changes to sleep
e: emotion
- agression
- irrability
c: cognitive
- memory impairment
- decreased concentration
FFF (flight-fight-freeze response)
a response that occurs due to the arousal of the sympathetic nervous system
activated when the body is confronted with a stressor and chooses to either:
FIGHT, FLIGHT OR FREEZE!!
CORTISOL?
a hormone released in times of stress to aid the body in maintaining heightened arousal
ELEMENTS OF GAS (stages)
alarm reaction (shock)
alarm reaction (countershock)
resistance
exhaustion
SHOCK (ALARM REACTION)
- blood pressure and body temp drop (dominant parasympathetic ns)
COUNTERSHOCK (ALARM REACTION)
- adrenalin released
- activates FFF
- sympathetic ns is dominant
: heart race
RESISTANCE
- cortisol is released to help repair the damages caused due to stress
EXHAUSTION
- immune system is left weakened and prolonged
- illnesses and disease
- release of adrenalin: occurs negative impacts e.g. uculers
STRENGTHS OF GAS?
- highlights predictable patterns that can be measured in individuals
- evidence of a relationship between illness and stress
LIMITATIONS OF GAS?
- research was not conducted on humans
- does no account to individual differences in response to similar situations
WHY MIGHT BE GAS BE USEFUL?
because it measures the relationship between stress and physiological state. this it can be used in real life scanerios and bettr the health industry
