NEURO/SYNAPTIC PLASTICITY - LTP LTD etc Flashcards
what is neuroplasticity?
the ability for the brain to change in response to experience
what is synapticplasticity?
the ability of synaptic connections to change over-time in response to an activity or experience
(the process name for neuroplasticity)
what are the 2 types of neuroplasticity?
developmental: naturally across the lifespan
adaptive: occurs as a result of brain damage or trauma
LONG-TERM POTENTIATION (LTP) ?
refers to long-lasting strengthening of synaptic connections
: resulting in enhanced or more effections synaptic transmission
(bushier dendrites : sprouting)
LONG-TERM DEPRESSION (LTD) ?
refers to long-lasting decrease in strength of synaptic transmission
occurs there is a lack of stimulation between pre and post-synaptic
(elimination of unused dendrite branches : pruning)
SPROUTING?
the growth of new dendrites branches
: occurs when there is repeated activation of neuron
PRUNING?
elimination of unused dendrite branches
: occurs when there is low level activation of neuron
REROUTING?
the developmental of neural pathways to cater for change/loss of neurons due to DAMAGE (damage/trauma)
