Giving and asking information
Questions Requesting Information or Confirmation from the hearer
• Declarative questions: “Pass the ↗cheese.”
• Repetition questions: ↗ on Wh- word
A: “Ron broke his leg playing tennis”
B: “↗Who broke his leg?”/”↗How did he break it?”
• Echo questions:
A: “I’ve done it!”
B: “You’ve ↗done it ?”
• Tag questions: “,↗isn’t he?”, “Isn’t she ↘lovely.”
Questions to Find Out
• They take Proclaiming Tones
• *Speaker expects New⑵ Info.**
• The answer is so far unegotiated and the expectation the speaker presents is that the answer will enlarge the area of common ground.
• It invokes divergence (“You posses information I don’t”).
Questions to Check
• They take Reclaiming Tones
• *Speaker wants to check their assumptions**
• The speaker projects a context in which the answer has been negociated already .
• It invokes convergence (“Please confirm that I am right”).
